What’s the point of writing fantasy in an unjust society?

This is an edited version of the email I sent out to my readers today. If you’d like to receive more emails like this one, you can sign up for email alerts at Underrealm.net/free. You’ll even get a free fantasy novel as my way of saying thanks.

(Full disclosure: it’s the drug dealer business model. I give you the first one for free because I know you’ll be back to buy more.)

This is how I’m trying to fix the world.

THERE WAS A PROBLEM

I’m always nervous talking about this. I want you to enjoy reading what I write, and I want you to feel happier after you read it.

And I hope by the end of this one, you are happier.

But today I want to tell you about some of the problems I face.

Unfortunately, they’re the same problems I’ve been trying to solve for six years.

Underrealm started as an idea. A plan to fix something that I saw to be wrong in the world.

When I was a kid, I had a kid’s dreams. I wanted to write. I wanted to tell stories. I wanted to create worlds and create people to live in them and send those people on adventures that I never could have.
